Ricky Rietjens 🌿 Ecological Designer & Garden Specialist
Ricky is the Farm Manager and Wellness Coordinator at Upward Bound House, where he designs and tends urban farm sites by including the Farm on Yale and TAY campuses in South LA that turn soil into food security, healing, and youth empowerment for families navigating housing insecurity. Outside of that, he runs Ricky Farms, a regenerative land and education platform rooted in soil health, pollinator systems, and community climate literacy, and offers ecological design and native landscaping consulting across LA. He sits on the board of the Society of Ethnobiology as Web + Social Media Liaison and Chair of the Engagement Committee. In his talk, Competition in Nature: Lessons on Growth, Resilience, and Community, Ricky invites us to rethink what competition actually means. Instead of seeing it as winners and losers, he’ll explore how competition can help us grow, build resilience, and strengthen the communities around us.
